• Welcome to Film as Literature

As the name implies, students enrolled in this course will be using film as the text for discussion. Far too often students rely on generalizations and hollow evaluations when asked about a film, often citing either it was good or bad. The biggest problem with that dull binary is that there is no room for discussion! What made it good? What made it bad? Was it a lack of plot or were the cinematic techniques insufficient in developing characters, moving plot, or establishing a connection with the audience? Now there's something to discuss!

Students will continually evaluate their understanding of the construction of the film to the larger narrative, asking how such lighting serves to move the story, for example. Students are asked to create an original blog on each film to flex their critical thinking skills and prove to the world that they can wave goodbye to that old, boring, and simple binary of good or bad.
